You couldn’t be more right about the benefits of physical media. We are becoming more detached from the things which have historically defined us (movies, music, images) thanks to the migration to digital content. We thought we wanted ease and digital longevity but all it has done is overstimulate, dilute, and devalue the very thing we were looking to preserve.
Fantastic read! I've been preaching to friends and family for years about storing all of their memories in an iCloud account. At the very minimum we should be storing our stuff on hard drives we own and backed offsite.
Really enjoy your thoughts, and agree with many of them wholeheartedly!
Glad you pointed out the complexity of Vivian Mayer™. Can recommend 'Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes' when available. Picks up similar points on the importance of being able to revisit under-viewed work (and physical media).

Absolutely! I won’t pretend to have predicted what would become of the digital landscape, but I guess I held onto my DVDs for a reason!

Thanks Michael! Multiple backups in multiple places for sure! It’s hard to convince family to follow through on that though 😄

Thank you, Taro, and thanks for the recommendation too!
Exceptional writing. After film only memory remains as trustworthy ... Thanks for sharing!
